How Whittier Architecture Should Shape the Marketing

Whittier contains homes from multiple architectural periods and traditions. Good marketing should recognize those differences rather than force every property into the same photography, description and presentation formula.

The idea

Whittier contains homes from multiple architectural periods and traditions. Good marketing should recognize those differences rather than force every property into the same photography, description and presentation formula.

Craftsman: photograph craftsmanship

Porches, rooflines, exposed structural details, woodwork and built-ins often create the visual rhythm. The photography should make those details legible without turning the entire presentation into close-ups.

Spanish Revival: follow texture and sequence

Stucco, tile, arches, courtyards, ironwork and transitions between interior and exterior can be more important than a perfectly symmetrical room photograph. Warmth and material texture often carry the story.

Ranch: show the relationship to the land

Low horizontal forms, broad lots and indoor-outdoor connections can make arrival, yard and orientation especially important. The property may be remembered as much for how it sits as for any single room.

Postwar homes: look for proportion and light

Later homes may have simpler materials but strong planning ideas—large openings, practical circulation, patios or relationships to the yard. Those qualities deserve to be shown intentionally.

Do not assign a style casually

Architectural labels should be used carefully. When style, architect, builder or date matters to the marketing, documentation is better than guesswork.

Whittier reference material

The City of Whittier maintains a guide to common residential architectural styles and character-defining features found in the city. It is a useful starting point for identifying a home’s design language, but a specific property should not be assigned a historic or architectural classification without appropriate verification.

The City also maintains historic-preservation resources covering designated districts, landmarks, vintage buildings and applicable review processes.
